A voter was found `dead’ by the SPR when he went to vote this morning. The mistake was said to be from the NRD-but the `dead’ voter prefered to make a police report at Seberang Jaya Police station. Such mistakes seems to constitute a pattern as voters across the 3 state constituencies were found to miss the vote after their name dissappear from the updated to July 31st roll. Most of them voted in the Mar 8th General Election.
The full list of voters who missed out will follow. MAFREL will look into the disturbing pattern that emerged from the keenly faught election.
it always happen in Malaysia….
how can we prevent this from happening again?
Sigh!
Mati pun mau komplen! 😀
Sekarang semua yang telah pergi boleh bersemadi dengan aman dan damai!
Chinese Community says this is the month of Saints or Ghosts! The dear departed can rest in peace beginning now!
BK,
I guess the only way forward for electoral transparency is to establish:
a) Automatic qualification at age 21 for every eligible Malaysians at home and abroad.
b) a biometric system linked directly to the NRD database with each vote uploaded to a central server during a GE.
In time, we may not even have to leave our homes to vote with the advent of chip-based Mykads matched to a secure software program. Just slot in your Mykad into a home PC card reader and log-on to the ‘Election’ central server.
The EC’s purpose is solely to manage the election machinery on the ground as and when a GE is announced.
The present requirement for registration is both archaic, repetitious and totally inefficient.
If only there’s the political to do so!!!!!!!!!
Yes we should have automatic registration.
Another reason is that SPR introduce a lot of messy mistakes, by serving as another bureaucratic layer for input, update, verification.
SPR introduces also spelling mistakes, year of birth input mistakes, variations in spelling (particularly serious matter among Malay voters with variation of names, such as Mohd, Mohamad, Mohamed, Bin, B, B., Bn, Binti, Bt, Bt., Bte, etc)
But then we need to quickly follow up with demand to put the National Registration of IC Department under strong public and parliamentary scrutiny.
NRIC can also be scarry stuff, because it is under the powerful and opaque Home Ministry, and it is the one who made a mess of Sabahan ICs.
If not, we are trading a fox for a wolf.
The other four MAFREL findings as reported in MalaysiaKini.com
“Four names missing from electoral list”
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/88630
[Excerpt only]
The four voters who left without being allowed to cast their ballot were Asa Singh Mihar Singh, 72; Chieng Ngei Hwa, 56; Tan Gaik Liap, 61 and Ibrahim Saad, 45.
Asa Singh, a veteran voter since the country’s independence in 1957, had gone to vote at the SK Seberang Jaya national primary school in Persiaran Siakap. After waiting 30 minutes, he was told his name was not on the list by the officers in charge.
He left the station confused and complained to Mafrel volunteers stationed there.
The other three – Chieng, Tan and Ibrahim – had gone to the polling station at SMK Permatang Rawa national secondary school near Bukit Mertajam. Just like Asa, they were told their names were not on the electoral list. All three are experienced voters, who have voted in at least five of the previous general elections.
More arguments for automatic registration.
SPR also introduces update delay, in addition to mistake.
In 1999, 685,000 new voters were not able to vote despite having registered for about 6-7 months.
This acted in favour of the ruling coalition BN against the Barisan Alternatif.
