In a letter by Vijay Kumar Murugavell, in Malaysiakini’s letter column SPR’s no.2 Wan Ahmad was slammed as ignorant in puzzling over why Pakatan Rakyat has not been registered as a coalition. The letter writer pointed out that the Registrar of Society had made strange rule requiring 7 component parties for a coalition of parties to be eligible for registeration as a coalition under ROS. He criticised the provision as violating the freedom of association guaranteed by the Constitution.
Another way of looking at it is: since there is no need to register any coalition of less than 7 component parties under the ROS then SPR is overstepping its power in claiming that they can only recognise coalitions of over 7 component parties-something which is arbitrary made up by the SPR! In not recognising coalition of less than 7 members the SPR had shown an irrational prejudice against such coalition-something which negate their claim of trying to run fair elections. The SPR should explain why it should continue to hold on to such a prejudice!
