Another by-election is coming up-this time in Kelantan! UMNO and PAS will be put to a test. This time UMNO will not concede give up the contesting opportunity-much to the dissappointment of some PAS leaders. It is funny that politicians should want to win a seat without a fight-would they not want to get the position with a popular mandate? Anyway the by-election will keep the political parties on alert-they need to put up some performance to justify their position!

Wanita BN Prepared To Face The Manek Urai By-election
LABUAN, May 23 (Bernama) — Wanita Barisan Nasional (BN) is prepared to go all out to win the upcoming by-election in Manik Urai, Kelantan following the death of its assemblyman, Ismail Yaacob on Friday, its chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said Saturday.
“On behalf of Barisan Nasional, we’d like to convey condolence to the family of the late assemblyman,” she told reporters after visiting the UNHCR fire victims at Youth and Sports Department Hall, here.
Shahrizat said Wanita BN would also welcome it if the BN were field a woman candidate to contest the by-election.
“If she wins, this is going to be a history for BN, where a woman could win a seat for BN in Kelantan in particular,” she said.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday said that the BN would field a candidate in the by-election since the vacancy came about following the death of the assemblyman and was not a forced resignation.
Meanwhile on the Penanti by-election, Shahrizat said all BN wings had given full support to the decision made by the party leadership in not fielding a candidate.
“It is a political ploy by the opposition in vacating the seat. Why should we field candidate,” she said.
Meanwhile in KOTA BAHARU, Kelantan Umno Liaison deputy chairman Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin said Kelantan Umno felt that only the Manek Urai voters had the right to determine who was qualified to represent them.
He also said that no one had the right to ask which party to contest or not to contest in the by-election, including national PAS election director Datuk Mustafa Ali who had suggested that the Barisan Nasional (BN) should not contest in the constituency as it was a PAS stronghold.
“In the democratic process, the people have the right to decide. It’s the people’s right to decide who they want to choose as their representative,” he said.
Mustafa had said yesterday that PAS was confident of defending Manek Urai and if the BN decided to contest, many could expect which party would emerge as the winner.
Meanwhile commenting further, Dr Awang Adek, who is also the Deputy Minister of Finance, said that for the Manek Urai by-election, the Kelantan BN and Umno would mobilise their election machinery and choose the best candidate that could be accepted by the people.
