The show down has begun: as many as 7 persons have been arrested so far to prepare the ground for the `opening’ of the Perak State Assembly tomorrow-May 7th. Not only that the following motions have been sent to the Perak Speaker Sivakumar:
1. Motion to change the Speaker;
2. Motion to change the Public Account Committee
3. Motion to change the Priviledge Committee
4. Motion to change the Rules and Regulation Committee
Not only that the BN faction had applied to the Court to bar anyone congregating around the State Assembly building. Already the FRU are the first to check in for the new session of the State Assembly to be opened by the Perak’s King.
All these actions does not show that there will be an `opening’ of the State Assembly-but a enforced closing up of the processes within the Assembly-as though to pursue some unspeakable agenda which could be repugnant to the people!
To remind the readers the BN faction had also applied to the court to declare that the Speaker was wrong to bar the BN Excos from the State Assembly for extended period, readmit the 3 supposedly resigned Assemblypersons, and to affirm the Sultan of Perak’s appointment of BN’s Zambry as the Perak’s new MB.
However these declarations from the court had been rebutted thus: the Barring of the BN Excos was passed by the State Assembly held under a tree-which was not ruled illegal by the Court-so it was no longer the Speaker who barred the BN Excos; The 3 Assemblypersons are still subjected to the Speaker’s power to attend the Assembly pending debate within the house-since the Assembly’s proceeding is not subject to the Court’s intervention; Next the Sultan’s sacking of the Pakatan MB Nizar has been disputed by even the ex-PM Mahathir who dispute the King’s power to sack a MB; Only a vote of no-confidence in a State Assembly can do that.
Where the BN faction may not be able to argue their way through-bearing in mind the Speaker’s unchallengable power, shaped by BN’s own making, they may rely on commanding the civil servants (legal advisor, State Secretary etc) and the security officers (PDRM) to defy the Speaker’s order to keep away the barred BN Excos. So it will not be the power of reason than a reason of power that the BN faction will rely on to legitimise its power on May 7th. By the look of it they will stop at nothing to achieve this purpose. A standoff between BN/police vs Pakatan Assemblypersons/people will be unavoidable on May 7th.
Unless some cooler head prevail and dissolve the State Assembly and allow the people to decide who they want to be their government.
Look from this perspective the arrests are the side shows -the real target is to legitimise the power grabs. Make no mistake about it.
