The newly minted PM Najib finally said what he really meant: BN may not fight the Penanti seat after the sear was vacated by the PKR ex-DCM Mohd Fairuz. Previously there were noises made along the line that by-elections is too costly and that the by-election is pointless in this time of economic troubles. However the real point is : BN has seen the futility of fighting for the seat because it is unlikely to avoid another humiliating defeat!
If this is clarified then it is easy enough to deconstruct Najib’s arguments on the by-election he wanted to avoid:
* By-election too expensive? Actually the campaign expenses is legally set at Rm100 000.00 for each candidate. What is Rm100 000.00 compared to the millions that has always been spent on each government projects which are questionable? Even the administration, security etc costs are not so high if the BN doesn’t insist on overspending on the by-elections eg they spent RM11.5mil in Kuala Terengganu to put 6000 police at the by-election. Why?
Then there is a hypocritical argument that there is no good reason for the by-election, which served to only clean up PKR’s houses. Well it is actually a honourable thing to do for ruling political leader being investigated for wrong doings to step down to clean up their image before they carry on their political participation. This is a course of action which is rarely done in Malaysian political culture. Only untained leaders-and seen to be untainted, that can see through the integrity of the government.
In any case there is a case-contrary to Najib’s logic, for every people’s rep to be elected-even where BN does not want to fight. When there is no opponent a candidate should still be voted upon to prove that he can muster a minimum votes to get into the office. Without that a walk-over candidate will always has a question mark over his real support!
