Currently there are 2 speculations about by-elections:1. Penanti-the state constituency of Mohd Fairuz, the resigned Deputy CM of Penang, who is under investigation for corruption; and 2. Bkt Lanjan, state seat of Selangor for Elizabeth Wong, whose nude photos were posted on internet. There are reasons to look forward to the 2 by-elections-if they really happen, to allow the PR to show its cleaner way in so far as dealing with its members are concerned. On the other hand there is also a noticeable by-election fatigue-after 5 by-elections in exactly 13 months, which is a factor which should be dealt with wisely.
UPDATE1: Elizabeth Wong had been offered to stay on in both her positions as State Assemblyperson as well as State Exco member by Selangor MB and she had decide to accept the offer as one of her life’s `hardest decision’.
UPDATE 2: Resigned Penang’s DCM FAiruz may not cause a by-election as yet-while the MACC decide whether to prosecute him.
So: No by-elections yet!
By-elections are useful as a way to gauge public support for a ruling party’s performance. So if the by-elections are too close their values in this regards may be discounted. So a better spaced out by-elections are a lot more preferable. So may be the 2 by-elections, if there are cases for them, could be delayed by 3-6 months where possible to enable voters to take into account of the parties’ performance during the time. An advantage of this delayed by-elections would be is that the parties are kept on tip toes to deal with public sentiments-contrary to the practice by long ruling parties to play ostrich when their members’ conducts run counter to public sentiments.
