The SPR has been used to spouting the rhetoric by BN politicians that since Opposition parties sometimes do win in elections then the elections must be fair to all. While it is true that the opposition may relax, unadvisedly, on the issue of free and fair elections after such victories, such arguments gloss over the persistence of the much observed unfair practices eg abuse of government faciltiies, making public allocations to win votes for 1 side; unbalanced media reports etc. As long as these weaknesses persist the elections are still not free and fair.
Malaysian elections are not comparable to a football match in terms of being fair to both sides, or what is otherwise called a `level playing field’. Similarly those who win by unfair practices eg making public allocation up to 7omil in a by-election cannot claim that they won it fairly. In both cases the will of the people are muzzled or discounted. Democracy is still waiting its turn to speak!
Within a week Mafrel will release the reports of findings for the 3 by-elections. Watch out!
