Mafrel team made a survey of Bkt Selambau today and found the sleepy town to have just wake up to the impending by-election! Operation centres and banners sprung up from all major parties -together with independents, non-BN parties (IPF), non-party group eg Hindraf. Even the numerous smart police’s `pondok'(tents) seems to give an impression that they are part of the campaigning parties! The intensity may not equal that of Bkt Gantang -but the momentum is certainly building up that way! We saw a rainbow plunging down at Bkt Selambau in the evening -after a shower, seemingly promising the folks here that there will be a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!
Many `independents’ are also trying their luck-said by some, including Samy Vellu as favouring the BN, as they think the `indepndents’ will split the opposition votes especially the more directed Indian votes.
The campaign activities have been kicked started well ahead of the nomination day on Mar 29th, after which official campaign is allowed to start. The high stakes involved in the by-elections had caused the parties to start the sprint before the whistle. Anwar & Najib have both showed their face here in the last week.
The Bkt Selambau that we visited today is the modern face of Bkt Selambau-quite different from the old/original Bkt Selambau town that we saw the other day. The old town is some 20km from this new town. Look like the new town is also where the bulk of the 35 000 voters are living-and deserve all the attention as reflectred by operation centres set up by all parties!
