MAFREL-Northern Region held a meeting this afternoon to discussed about the preparation for the 2 by-elections in the northern region. 3 reps from Kedah came and the preparation was thus focused on the Kedah by-election. The meeting attended by 20+ members decied to support the by-election observation in 3 ways: training, financial support and human power.
Training wise Mafrel-NR will produce a standard module for training of the observers, the 1st of which is scheduled on Mar 21st, 3.oopm, at Sg JIM office. Since there are 22 polling stations in Bkt Selambau there should be at least 44 volunteers to enable 2 to keep each polling station/school under monitoring. A group of experienced lecturer will prepare the streamlined training module using Mafrel’s long accumulated material.
Funding wise there are plans to raise fund by doing some fundraiser projects eg printing t-sirts for mafrel’s supporters.
Human power wise there were over 10 attendants who volunteered to be observer on Apr 7th by-election. More will be recruited and trained before the poll. Among the 10 who volunteered to be observers on Polling day some even also volunteered to be at the nomination day as observers. JIM Sg Petani has offered, through Faisal who was present, their office as the Operation Centre. He was so enthusiastic that he even offered to house f/time volunteers at the ops centre! The 3 kedah reps agreed to form a committee to kick start the Bkt Selambau observation mission, with Mar 21st set as the date to decide who was to become the local Coordinator for the mission.
Update: Volunteers & Donations wanted!
All interested volunteers are welcomed to contact us (013-5900339) for training and assignment as observers to the various polling centres. Taking up such a role is better than to become an election tourist or a party bum who hang around not knowing what to do, excpet jacking up local inflation! If you can volunteer your time at the Ops centre you can even get to stay there-this apply for outstation observers/volunteers! There are only a few stay-in vacancies!
Similarly with donation we welcome those public interested folks to consider donating towards this unfunded operation that help you keep the `bustards’ honest! Sure they are not up to the desirable`honest’ level yet but it may in time to come, if we keep an eye on them. Call us if you want to make some donation which go a long way to help run an operation centre, run training sessions, deploy observers to all polling centres, keeping everyone in good communication etc.
As there were no Perak representatives around there will be attempt to contact the Perak side again to try to kick start the observation mission there. However the observers from Selangor (assuming there is no by-election at Bkt Lanjan), Kelantan and Terengganu would be helping the Perak observation mission.
Earlier Northern region Coordinator Ong BK reported on the election observation at Bangladesh and Kuala Terengganu, while Jamaludin, the Mainland Coordinator reported on Mafrel’s recent meeting in KL.
The meeting closed at 6.00pm, after a fruitful discussion that effectively launched the Bkt Selambau by-election observation mission.
