After the Kuala Terengganu by-election many observers friends are discussing the possiblity of going to the next exciting by-election -or at least sending a team there to send out hard-to-get on-the-ground reports. But is it so easy as we wish?
Before that some people ask: why go so far? But far from where? If you assume that all distances measure from Kl then you expose your capital centric mindset-something which is not going to go down well to Malaysian voters in Pensiangan and places far from you! Ok-to be fair to all citizens a credible observer group should not shed its responsibility in any part of the country!
So more, some observers hacks add, more irregularities tend to happen where the public views are less. So….?
OK-after establishing the rationales for going to Pensiangan -which is quite sure to have a by-election, in a few months, we need to look into the logistics. Even in Permatang Pauh, Kuala Terengganu Mafrel only sent no more than half a dozen organisers from the capital. The bulk of the observers are recruited from the locality. So the burden of transport to the place need not be too overwhelming. So we may just need to fundraise transport for no more than 4-5 persons, hopefully with 1-2 from Sabah or Sarawak. They will be the forward team or in observers’ parlance, the Long Term Observers(LTOs) who may be there for a whole month, to set things up and more importantly to recruit Short Term Observers(STOs) locally and to set up an Operation Centre locally. Since the terrain is extensive and rough we need a 4-wheel drive or 2 to go around for 1 month. We need local advice on where to lay our hands on these items. Then we need to locate accommodations there, internet access etc. So the potential LTOs need to be willing(motivation to serve the cause), able(to live the local way of life and to report back on how you cope!) and available(for a month or a bit more to finish reports). Then what the rest of the public can do is to do a fund raising drive to fund the mission. The amount..???? We will cost it and let you know.
The only thing for sure is:we need to plan early. So anyone who are keen on playing any part on this `trip’ please contact us. Even your info or contacts for logistics will help-eg is there anyone from that part of Malaysia who are in KL/Penang or thereabout? We would like to meet you!
