A report from one of our volunteers, Jong, all the way from Ipoh, on our Press Conference:
Mafrel’s Press Conference – Permatang Pauh by-election 22 Aug 2008
The PC at Mafrel’s Operations Centre at Permatang Pauh was well attended by the media – Chinese and English press and amongst them Malaysiakini and Ntv7 reporters.
Mafrel’s Northern Region Co-ordinator BK Ong who in the midst of his busy schedule for weeks now and whom I understand stayed up whole night working, was in no mood for SPR’s latest twist on the Electoral Rolls Verification(ERV)- to opt for the 31 July 2008 Electoral Rolls rather than the actual gazzetted roll of 19 June 2008. This notable departure from normal accepted practice is questionable and the haste inwhich it is done without allowing public scrutiny of the 31 July 2008 Electoral Rolls is most suspicious.
SPR is seen to be acting in bad faith, and how can such decision by SPR be absolute, with total disregard for the Malaysian electorates and civil society?
Day 6 – there was total of 24 complaints received by Mafrel from the public, against BN – 15, against PKR 3, against Police/SPR – 6
Mafrel has forwarded all copies of complaints to parties concerned for their comments, response and necessary action. Mafrel calls upon responsible citizens to come forward if they are faced with intimidation and threats to their freedom of choice in the coming by-election for abuse of power and public resources.
