The SPR has announced that the voters’ roll to be used at the Permatang Pauh by-election will be the one updated to July 31st-which is a clear month after the last gazetting date in June. Why are they using an ungazzetted roll? Which voters did they trimmed? We had enquired from the SPR Penang office and was old that they had only taken away people who had died and those who had moved away-no addition to the roll. After checking with the roll we found the trimmed voters: all 25 voters above 100 years old were automatically trimmed and for those under 100 years old some were trimmed. Eg in the gazzetted roll there was an old women voter of 128 years old and her name had dissappeared from the trimmed roll. While this action seems to reflect SPR’s sensitivity that they don’t want anymore charges of dead voters being left in the roll the haste with which this is done is noticeable here. Question: were the names checked before being trimmed?
If there are voters who were among those trimmed but still alive then this would amount to denying them the right to vote! MAFREL will conduct a limited voters verification to ascertain this in next few days.
