On 7 Aug., we had our first meeting at the Seberang Jaya mosque. We had good attendance with about 40 people. On that day, Ong, the Northern Region Coordinator brief the volunteers on what were the tasks they had to do and asked for volunteers to take up certain duties. Someone was assigned to look for an ‘operation centre’ but due to Ong’s enthusiasm, he himself managed to find the centre, an empty building along a row of shop-houses in Jalan Arrowana. The full address of the centre is:
1508, Tingkat 1, Jalan Arowana, Taman Arowana, Seberang Jaya.
(next to Polyklinik Azra)
Below is a picture of the centre (sorry, it was night time, thus the picture doesn’t turn out well). The staircase you see on the right, leads directly to the first floor.
Having found a centre, Ong and Jamaluddin, the mainland coordinator, decided to call for a meeting at the new centre, on 12 Aug. Therefore, on 12 Aug. afternoon, How Whee, a dedicated MAFREL member from the island, helped to transfer chairs from Ong’s office in Penang (D’space) to the centre. He also bought a table in Seberang Jaya, as the office is very bare!
The office has a nice big living room, where we turned into a meeting place and there are two empty rooms, where we can turned them into bedrooms or restrooms for volunteers who came from out-station.
The meeting on 12 Aug, see about 25 people in attendance, several of them were new volunteers. After some short briefing from Ong, there was a registration exercise for new volunteers to make the MAFREL tags. Old and new volunteers were also required to apply for accreditation from SPR so as to be able to enter the polling stations.
As the centre is quite bare, and we need to work in it for over 20 days, donations of any electrical items (eg fan, air-con) or furnitures, equipments, mattresses are most welcome.
Some pictures of the meeting in progress at the new centre. First meeting at the centre! Those over 20 who attended were the privileged ones to be first to step into the centre for the first time.
Please don’t forget, to ease our work, we need donations of stuffs for our operation centre. Contact Lucia or Ong (email found on sidebar) if you would like to donate something. Thank you.
